Russell Skylantern was born in Coruscant in the year 9 BFE. His father Razel Skylantern was, privately, Senator Palpatine's personal advisor during the time of the Old Republic. Also Razel supported Palpatine in his taking of power and creation of the Empire in the year 24 BFE.

When his son Russell was born, Razel introduced him to Palpatine, and the Emperor said that Russell had a great power in the Force and He will be proud of take charge of training Russell when he was ten years old. Also for those years, Razel advised Palpatine the installation of the Delta Source in the ch'hala trees of the Imperial Palace's Great Corridor.

Russell grew during the zenith of the Empire, under the Imperial doctrine. His mother, Namya Skylantern, sent him to a school that taught him the norms that rule in the Empire. In Coruscant Russell received an Imperial primary school education and egress with honors. Unfortunately Russell could not receive Palpatine's training in the Force due to his tragic death during the Battle of Endor.

When the second Death Star got lost, Razel Skylantern anticipated the immediate fall of the Empire and he erased several Imperial files that committed him from the Library's archives of the Imperial Palace, but he made a backup disk of the documents for the future. Additionally, he also changed their last name to Escalante which its pronunciation is similar. This way it was able to escape from the Rebel Inquisitors when they took possession of Coruscant.

After Razel erased the files he took his family to Nar Shaddaa (the smugglers' moon) to take refuge of the Rebel threat, because there the Rebellion won't look for them. Living with the fear that the Rebels will find him and his family, Russell realized that the Rebels wanted to spread the chaos and the disorder in the galaxy and they didn't adhere to a fair law. For this reason he chose to become an Imperial Officer to eradicate the Rebel threat and restore the order from the Galaxy.

In the Thrawn's years, Russell, fourteen years old, studied the Grand Admiral's strategies arduously and he became a great admirer of this excellent strategist. In Nar Shadaa Russell finished his high school studies in an Imperial secret hiding facility.

Fortunately the Grand Admiral Larsen recaptured Coruscant in the name of the Empire in the year 9 BFE and the "Escalante" family could return back to the planet-metropolis and they changed back their last name to their original last name. In Coruscant the Skylantern family attended to the Emperor Larsen's coronation in the Imperial Palace. There they introduced themselves to the new Emperor and Razel showed the hidden files that he had saved in the backup disk to Larsen. Emperor Larsen recognized the help that Razel Skylantern had contributed to the Empire in the first years and let Russell, after doing the test, join the Imperial Order as pilot in the Imperial Navy. Russell has sworn to serve the Empire and the Emperor above all things.
